Can You Become a Travel Agent for Free? An Honest Answer

Short answer: you can start for very little, but almost never for exactly zero. You do not need a degree, and most US states do not license travel agents. What you pay depends on two choices: the host agency you join and how you set up your business. This guide shows what can be free, what usually costs money, and what a realistic first-year budget looks like.

What Can Be Free

  • Education. Cruise lines, tour operators and tourism boards run free online training and certification programs for travel advisors.

  • A state license. Most states do not license travel agents. Four states have Seller of Travel laws (see below).

  • Industry credentials. When you join a host agency, you book under the host's CLIA and IATA numbers instead of paying for your own.

  • Booking tools. Supplier booking portals for cruises, tours and vacation packages are free for agents who sell under a host.

  • Your first clients. Friends, family and coworkers already travel. Telling them you now plan trips costs nothing.

What Usually Costs Money

  • Host agency startup fee: typically $0 to about $500. At BNT: a one-time $299, refunded in full when you earn $350 in commissions within 3 months.

  • Monthly or annual host fees: $0 to about $70 a month at many hosts, or an annual membership. At BNT: none.

  • Commission split: 70% to 80% to new agents at many hosts. At BNT: 80% to start, 90% once your annual commissions pass $15,000.

  • E&O (errors and omissions) insurance: included by some hosts; your own policy often costs about $400 to $1,200 a year. At BNT: not included; you buy your own policy.

  • Seller of Travel registration: required only in California, Florida, Hawaii and Washington, with rules and exemptions that vary. Check your state's rules before you sell.

  • Business setup: an LLC filing fee of about $35 to $500 depending on the state; an EIN from the IRS is free. Optional; not required to join BNT.

  • Website and email: $0 to about $30 a month. Optional.

  • Extra training: supplier courses are free; paid programs vary. At BNT: optional BNT Academy Premium, $35 a month.

A Realistic First-Year Budget

  • Lean start with BNT: the $299 startup fee (refunded if you earn $350 in commissions in your first 3 months), your own E&O policy, and free supplier training. No monthly fees and no LLC required.

  • All-in membership: some hosts charge a monthly or annual fee that includes E&O insurance, for example $26 to $65 a month, plus any startup fee.

With most hosts, a beginner's first-year costs land between a few hundred dollars and about $1,500. Compare hosts by what you keep after all costs, not by the startup fee alone.

How the $299 Refund Works at BNT

  • You pay the one-time $299 registration fee when you join. It cannot be waived or taken from future commissions.

  • If your commissions reach $350 or more within three months of sign-up, BNT refunds the full $299.

  • Commissions count when the supplier actually pays them. Many suppliers pay after the client travels, so trips that travel soon, like a hotel stay, a short vacation or a cruise departing within weeks, help you qualify.

Example: you join on March 1 and book a 7-night all-inclusive vacation for a couple traveling in April. The package pays $600 in commission after their stay, and it arrives in May. You passed $350 within three months, so your $299 comes back.

Watch Out for "Free" Offers That Are Not

Some travel companies advertise free or cheap sign-up but make their money from monthly memberships, travel club discounts or recruiting. Warning signs:

  • You pay monthly for training or "travel discounts", and selling travel is optional.

  • Income is promised for signing up other people.

  • You are told you will travel for free just by joining.

The Costs That "Free" Can Hide

  • Low commission splits. A host with no fees but a 60% split can cost you more than a small fee with an 80% split.

  • Minimum sales or activity rules. Ask what you must sell to stay active. At BNT, an account stays active when you earn at least $500 in agent commissions within six continuous months.

  • Insurance. If E&O is not included, add a policy to your budget.

  • Contract terms. Read the termination and non-compete rules before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to become a travel agent?

Not in most states. California, Florida, Hawaii and Washington have Seller of Travel laws, each with its own rules and exemptions.

Can I become a travel agent with no experience?

Yes. A host agency gives you credentials, supplier access and training, so you can make your first bookings within weeks.

Is BNT's $299 fee refundable?

Yes, in full, when your commissions reach $350 within three months of joining. The fee cannot be waived.

Does BNT include E&O insurance?

No. BNT has no monthly fees and does not provide E&O insurance, so agents buy their own policy.

How much can I earn?

It depends on what you sell. For example, a $4,900 vacation package that pays $667 in commission earns a BNT agent $533 at 80% or $600 at 90%.

Is BNT an MLM?

No. BNT earns a share of the commission on travel you sell. There is no income from recruiting.
